Anthropic locks in $10 billion of compute from Volta Infra, a cloud startup that launched out of stealth six months ago

Anthropic is securing $10 billion worth of computing capacity from Volta Infra Holdings, a cloud startup founded just months ago. The six-year agreement will deliver compute from a data center in Tydal, Norway, where Bitcoin miner Bitdeer Technologies operates hydropower-fed infrastructure equipped with Nvidia's latest Vera Rubin chips. Volta estimates the capacity at 133 megawatts, with deliveries in two phases through March 2027. The company has also secured 1 gigawatt of power for near-term data center expansion. Bitdeer's stock jumped 14 percent following the announcement.

Volta was established in early 2026 by former managers from Brookfield, the asset manager. The startup has raised $300 million in venture capital alongside the Anthropic deal, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Altimeter Capital, with additional investment from Nvidia and Michael Dell. The funding round values the company at $2.4 billion. Volta has also established a $5 billion financing pool to help customers cover the upfront costs of expensive AI chips.

Anthropic is aggressively scaling its compute capacity. The company has already secured agreements with Google and Broadcom, Amazon, SpaceX, and AMD. However, industry analysts caution that the intricate dependencies between chip suppliers and AI developers could amplify losses if AI demand disappoints. Volta exemplifies this pattern: Nvidia serves as both an investor in the startup and the supplier of the chips it deploys.
