Anthropic has signed a $10 billion computing deal with Volta Infra Holdings, a months-old cloud infrastructure startup backed by Nvidia, to secure capacity from a major data center. The deal will be delivered in collaboration with Bitdeer Technologies Group.

The agreement marks a significant move by Anthropic to meet rising demand for its AI products as businesses and consumers increasingly adopt its tools for workflow optimization. Access to computing infrastructure is critical as Anthropic continues scaling its operations alongside growing competition in the AI sector.

Volta's data center facility in Norway will provide 133 megawatts of capacity and will be equipped with Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips to support the deployment. According to Bloomberg News, the project also involves partnerships with Elon Musk's SpaceX, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., and Akamai Technologies Inc.'s data centers.

Bitdeer, Volta's partner, is among a rising number of Bitcoin mining operators converting their data centers from cryptocurrency mining to supporting AI applications as Bitcoin prices have declined. This shift represents a broader trend of infrastructure being repurposed for the rapidly growing AI industry.

Anthropic raised $65 billion in a major funding round this year to cover the substantial costs of AI development. The company is also considering a potential Wall Street debut as soon as this year.

Both Anthropic and rival OpenAI have pursued agreements with large technology firms and emerging cloud-computing startups to build out the data center infrastructure essential for developing advanced AI systems and supporting widespread adoption. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that his company expects to spend trillions of dollars on physical infrastructure for AI, and is currently planning a new data center in Georgia with a projected cost exceeding $30 billion.

These large-scale infrastructure commitments have drawn criticism for creating a globalized network of dependencies between suppliers and AI developers that could face substantial losses if AI demand fails to meet elevated expectations.
