Tesla is building the largest grid-scale battery storage facility in the US at xAI's Memphis Colossus site.

Grid-connected battery storage directly addresses power intermittency and enables Colossus to operate at higher utilization; the trend signals that data-center power reliability now demands dedicated on-site energy storage.

720 Tesla Megapacks, deployed across formerly quiet Memphis terrain, now constitute the single largest grid-connected battery system in the United States. Satellite imagery dated July 11, 2026, confirmed the scale of the installation at xAI’s Colossus 2 data center in Tennessee—a facility purpose-built to train cutting-edge AI models using hundreds of thousands of GPUs.

The system’s estimated storage capacity is approximately 2.8 GWh, with projections indicating it could reach up to 3.3 GWh. Depending on the specific Megapack configuration deployed, total power output ranges from 720 MW to 1.4 GW.

A Billion-Dollar Battery Habit

Between 2024 and mid-2026, xAI and its parent company, SpaceX, invested approximately $1 billion in Tesla Megapacks and associated infrastructure. A single transaction in April 2026 accounted for $269 million.

SpaceX completed its acquisition of xAI in February 2026, consolidating Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence initiatives under one corporate umbrella alongside his aerospace operations.

Prior to the battery system’s full deployment, the Memphis facility relied on temporary natural gas turbines to supplement grid supply, drawing environmental criticism from local residents and advocacy groups. The new Megapack array mitigates this reliance by charging during off-peak hours and discharging power during periods of peak demand.

The Tennessee Valley Authority board authorized a direct grid connection for the Colossus 2 site in August 2026. Officials at Memphis Light, Gas and Water have publicly acknowledged the installation’s scale, framing it as a meaningful piece of the region’s evolving energy puzzle.

Tesla’s Energy Storage Business Gains Its Biggest Showcase

Tesla commenced production of its next-generation Megapack 3 at the Texas Megafactory in August 2026. Each unit is a self-contained lithium-ion battery system engineered for utility-scale applications. Deploying 720 units at a single site underscores both the modular architecture of the design and the manufacturing scale necessary to execute orders of this magnitude.

The nearly $1 billion in procurement from a single client over a two-year period establishes a significant revenue channel. With SpaceX owning xAI and xAI purchasing Tesla energy systems, capital circulates within a closed-loop structure that reinforces the broader Musk ecosystem.
