Digital Realty has broken ground on its ZUR4 data centre campus.
Digital Realty, a cloud- and carrier-neutral data centre platform, has announced the commencement of construction on a state-of-the-art facility in Glattbrugg, Switzerland. Designated ZUR4, the new building sequentially follows the earlier ZUR1, ZUR2, and ZUR3 facilities on the campus. Spanning 6,300 square metres, ZUR4 will deliver 15MW of IT capacity to meet surging demand for digital infrastructure in one of Europe’s premier data and finance hubs.
The facility has been engineered specifically to support high-density deployments and artificial intelligence workloads. Leveraging state-of-the-art cooling systems and an energy-efficient architecture, ZUR4 is designed to address the escalating power and processing requirements of companies driving innovation in AI and machine learning. This aligns with Digital Realty’s broader sustainability strategy, which mandates that its entire European portfolio, including all Swiss operations, runs on 100% renewable energy while supporting a circular economy.

The project’s expansion has received approval from local authorities, underscoring its regional economic significance. “The expansion of ZUR4 vividly demonstrates how much digital infrastructure has become the backbone of the Canton of Zurich's economy. Investments like this not only secure jobs and innovative capacity, but also strengthen our digital self-determination as a location,” said Barbara Franzen, Member of the Cantonal Council for the FDP in the Canton of Zurich. The development will directly support local enterprises requiring robust data location compliance, resilience, and connectivity within their own digital infrastructure strategies.
The latest addition to the Zurich campus builds upon significant industry achievements, most notably ZUR2, which was awarded the first PLATINUM Plus certification by the Swiss Datacenter Efficiency Association (SDEA)—a landmark recognition for sustainable data centre operations in Switzerland.
