Congresswoman Nancy Mace has renewed her call for a one-year moratorium on new data center construction in South Carolina, citing concerns over the strain such facilities place on the state's infrastructure and residents.

According to her office, the moratorium would provide lawmakers with time to assess the potential effects on the electric grid, water supply, and costs borne by local residents. The push comes as South Carolina has emerged as an attractive destination for AI data center development; a recent CNBC report ranked the state among the top 10 places for AI data center deals.

Mace has also proposed that future data centers should be required to pay for the energy they consume as well as any necessary grid upgrades required to support their operations.
