importance 70Hundreds of residents packed a Newport Township commissioners' meeting Monday night to oppose a proposed AI data center campus slated for old mine land in the Lee section of the township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. According to the Times Leader, the plan calls for 15 data centers and three natural gas power generation facilities on nearly 1,400 acres. The township had issued 15 zoning permits for the project in August.
One commissioner told the assembled crowd that the board had not yet met with the developer. The following morning, developer Fit Energy went public with a press release and website announcing the project.
