Amazon has completed its $50 billion investment in OpenAI, securing an estimated 5% stake in the artificial intelligence company as the ChatGPT developer prepares for a potential public listing.

Originally announced in February 2026 as part of a multi-year strategic partnership, the transaction proceeded in two tranches: an initial $15 billion investment followed by a $35 billion payment upon completion of agreed conditions.

The investment forms part of OpenAI's record funding round announced in February, which initially disclosed $110 billion in new capital at a $730 billion pre-money valuation. Commitments included $50 billion from Amazon, $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank, and participation from additional investors, bringing the total to $122 billion.

Neither Amazon nor OpenAI has publicly confirmed the reported 5% ownership stake, nor have they formally announced a date for OpenAI's initial public offering. Reports suggest the company is considering a public listing to raise capital for developing and operating increasingly advanced AI models.

The investment reinforces a broader commercial partnership between OpenAI and Amazon Web Services. OpenAI will leverage AWS cloud infrastructure and Amazon's Trainium AI chips to train and operate its models, while the companies plan to develop customized solutions for Amazon's consumer and enterprise applications. OpenAI has also entered into a $38 billion agreement to access AWS computing infrastructure, intended to expand its computing capacity while reducing dependence on a single cloud provider.

For Amazon, the investment provides a stake in one of the world's leading artificial intelligence companies while driving demand for AWS infrastructure and its internally developed AI processors. Amazon is simultaneously expanding its partnership with Anthropic, developer of the Claude family of AI models.

OpenAI develops ChatGPT and a portfolio of generative AI models and enterprise products. The company is investing heavily in computing infrastructure, model development, and AI products as competition intensifies among technology companies including Google, Anthropic, Meta, and xAI.
