Developer Moncalieri Logistics has submitted plans for what it claims will be Italy's largest data center.

A proposed data center in Piedmont, northwest Italy, could become the country's largest, according to regional officials. The four-building complex is planned for the former Industria Libraria Tipografica Editrice (ILTE) industrial site in Moncalieri, spanning approximately 2.9 million square feet (270,000 square meters) with a total electrical capacity of 576 megawatts.

Moncalieri Logistics, a company linked to real estate developer Lcp, submitted the project plans. Lcp acquired the site in 2022 for €9 million with the intention of converting it into a warehouse for German ecommerce company Zalando. The ILTE facility, a major Italian printing and publishing company founded in Turin in 1947, closed in 2016 and was listed for sale in 2023 at €4 million ($4.5 million).

Councilor Valentina Cera announced the project publicly on September 17, calling it a facility that "would likely become the largest in Italy." She emphasized the urgency of regulatory action: "The succession of new, ever-larger projects makes the adoption of a clear, uniform, and preventive regional regulatory framework urgent and unavoidable. The absence of such regulations creates difficulties for individual municipalities and local communities. Moreover, the need for regional legislation had been identified by the Regional Council of Piedmont as one of its regulatory objectives for 2026. We would therefore like to know the current status of the approval process for the regional bill, which is now urgent."

Piedmont is currently preparing legislation to regulate data center infrastructure development across the region. Enrico Bussalino, regional councilor and assessor for Piedmont, stated that a public consultation has been launched to gather feedback and proposals. "The aim is to launch a participatory process based on transparency and dialog with the local community," Bussalino said. "Contributions already received are currently being reviewed by the technical departments for the necessary assessments. Once this preliminary review is complete, the department will initiate the procedure to draft a new law."

Piedmont's neighboring region of Lombardy recently passed Regional Law No. 11/2026, Italy's first regulatory framework for data center approval. The law aims to promote sustainability and prioritize development on brownfield sites.
