OpenAI is nearing a $70 billion annualized revenue rate, up approximately 70 percent since the start of Q3, according to reporting by Axios. The annualized rate metric projects current monthly revenue across a full year. Anthropic's rate reportedly surpassed $65 billion in July and may now match or exceed OpenAI's. Anthropic is preparing an initial public offering as early as November.

OpenAI's growth is driven by enterprise sales and an aggressive pricing strategy against Claude and Chinese models—a competitive posture the company reinforced with the recent launch of GPT-6.1-Sol. The Codex coding assistant is also expanding rapidly, capitalizing on the popularity of the GPT-6 model family.

At DevDay, OpenAI disclosed updated usage figures: over 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users, more than 35 million weekly ChatGPT Work and Codex users, and 2.5 million businesses deployed on OpenAI products. The critical question that remains is whether revenue growth will accelerate sufficiently to cover the substantial data center infrastructure costs required to sustain this scale.
