Micron has committed US$ 10 billion to establish new US-based Research Labs, with its Boise hub focusing on post-DRAM and NAND technologies alongside advanced packaging.
On Thursday, Micron announced plans to establish the Micron Research Lab, a facility dedicated to exploring memory, computing, packaging, and semiconductor manufacturing technologies with commercial applications more than a decade away. The initiative will pool expertise from Micron, its customers, government organizations, startups, universities, and partners to develop pre-competitive intellectual property required for future deployment. The company has committed to investing $10 billion over the next 10 years into the project.
Historically, universities, independent R&D organizations, and internal corporate research divisions have explored new materials, architectures, phenomena, methods, and technologies years or decades before commercialization. Companies like Micron then leverage this foundational IP to engineer actual products. As technologies grow increasingly complex, the timeline from pre-competitive IP to market-ready product extends, while R&D costs rise. Joint development operations like the Micron Research Lab address this challenge by bridging fundamental research closer to product developers.
The lab will concentrate on future memory technologies, advanced memory and compute architectures, advanced packaging, and next-generation semiconductor manufacturing. Rather than merely advancing subsequent generations of DRAM or NAND, the Research Lab will investigate technologies that extend beyond Micron’s current product and technology roadmaps.

Micron envisions the Research Lab accommodating hundreds of researchers and operating as part of a broader global network. The company plans to fund university collaborations, establish satellite laboratories worldwide, and partner closely with external research entities. This network will link the Boise hub with Micron’s existing R&D operations across the United States, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore, and Taiwan, accelerating the transition from fundamental discoveries to practical semiconductor technologies.

While global collaboration on fundamental research is well-established in the semiconductor industry, Micron’s Research Lab will be the first organization of its kind to unite fundamental research specifically dedicated to memory across multiple independent organizations.

The research organization will operate out of a new facility near Micron’s global R&D center in Boise, Idaho, though this will not serve as its sole location. Beyond laboratory space, the site will host research conferences, workshops, and innovation forums designed to convene scientists and engineers from Micron and external organizations. Micron expects to break ground on the Boise facility in calendar 2027.
