AEP has agreed to buy up to 1.6 GW of Mainspring linear generators, and separately expects to spend about $4 billion on a 702-MW Bloom Energy fuel cell project in Wyoming that is under contract to Google.
The up-to-1.6 GW purchase and the Google-contracted Bloom fuel cell project show utilities turning to on-site and non-grid generation to energize AI campuses faster than transmission can deliver.
