SpaceX is reportedly seeking $40 billion to buy Nvidia AI chips, a report from StratNews Global.

If completed, this would be one of the largest single GPU procurement and financing efforts in the sector, tightening Nvidia supply and raising the compute scale benchmark for AI infrastructure buyers.

SpaceX is in talks with banks and asset managers to raise $40 billion to purchase artificial intelligence chips from Nvidia, according to a Reuters report citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The Elon Musk-led company is seeking approximately $10 billion in bank loans and another $30 billion in investment-grade debt to finance the proposed chip purchase, one source told Reuters, confirming an earlier report by the Financial Times. SpaceX is also discussing financing with asset manager PIMCO, according to one of the sources. The deal remains private, and the sources declined to be identified.

**Banks and Investors May Finance Chip Purchase**

Apollo is expected to lead the financing arrangement and help distribute the debt among a broad range of investors, the Financial Times reported.

SpaceX and Nvidia did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Apollo and PIMCO declined to comment.

The proposed transaction highlights the enormous financial requirements of the artificial intelligence boom, as technology companies compete to secure advanced processors and build the computing infrastructure needed to develop and deploy AI systems.

**AI Infrastructure Drives Demand for Capital**

The scale of the proposed SpaceX financing comes amid rising investment in data centres and advanced computing hardware.

Morgan Stanley estimates that AI infrastructure will require $1.5 trillion in external financing by 2028. However, lenders and investors are becoming more cautious about funding the sector's rapid expansion.

Nvidia, the dominant supplier of AI processors, has also been expanding its involvement in financing arrangements for AI infrastructure. In August, it partnered with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR on platforms intended to mobilise more than $500 billion for AI infrastructure projects.

**Musk Plans to Expand AI Computing Capacity**

Musk said in September that xAI's Colossus 2 data centre could more than double the number of Nvidia chips it uses by December. He has also said the company plans to use Nvidia hardware exclusively for its data centres.

The proposed SpaceX purchase comes as demand for computing capacity continues to drive large-scale investment in AI hardware.

Following the report, SpaceX shares fell 2% in early trading, while Nvidia shares rose 0.5%.
