Due to HBM4e delays and sustained 2027 DRAM shortage, Nvidia is downgrading Rubin Ultra HBM specifications from HBM4e 12hi to evaluation of HBM4e 8hi, HBM4 12hi, and HBM4 8hi alternatives. Cloud service providers are similarly cutting HBM capacity in next-gen ASICs.

TrendForce reports that a DRAM supply shortage is expected to persist through 2027, prompting Nvidia to reassess the HBM configuration for its Rubin Ultra chip starting in Q3 2026. Consequently, Nvidia has shifted from an exclusive HBM4e 12hi design to evaluating alternatives including HBM4e 8hi and HBM4 variants, while some cloud service providers are also reducing HBM capacity in their next-generation ASICs.
