IREN Limited has cleared a significant milestone in its efforts to connect massive data centers to the Texas power grid. The company’s 2-gigawatt Sweetwater Hub has been conditionally classified as Base Load within ERCOT’s Batch Zero interconnection screening process. This designation categorizes the project as confirmed demand rather than a speculative application lingering in the queue.
For a developer expanding more than 5 GW of global data center capacity, securing recognition for two gigawatts as credible load within ERCOT—the operator of the nation’s largest and most energy-intensive grid—represents a substantial achievement.
ERCOT currently faces a severe backlog of interconnection requests, with hundreds of gigawatts of large-load applications, primarily from data centers, accumulating as artificial intelligence infrastructure expands across Texas. Batch Zero was introduced to resolve this congestion. Instead of reviewing applications individually, the framework aggregates credible projects to analyze their combined impact on grid stability. Projects awarded Base Load status are formally recognized as genuine demand, distinguishing them from unverified developer proposals that may never reach construction.
The classification remains conditional. Like all participants in Batch Zero, IREN must still complete additional verification stages before the designation becomes permanent.
Located in West Texas, the Sweetwater Hub consists of two distinct facilities: Sweetwater 1, which accounts for 1,400 MW of capacity, and Sweetwater 2, adding 600 MW, for a combined total of 2 GW. Sweetwater 1 is already ahead of many competing developments. A high-voltage substation at the site was energized on May 1, 2026, enabling the commencement of construction on an initial 300 MW of gross data center capacity. That first phase is scheduled to come online in the fourth quarter of 2027.
Listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol IREN, the company continues to scale its international data center development pipeline. Its current portfolio exceeds 5 GW across multiple regions, making the Sweetwater Hub a strategic cornerstone rather than the sole focus of its operations. IREN originally established its market presence through Bitcoin mining and high-performance computing before strategically pivoting toward large-scale data center development.
The significance of this development extends beyond IREN’s immediate operations. ERCOT launched the Batch Zero process following the Public Utility Commission of Texas’s approval of revised interconnection protocols in June 2026. These updated rules allow major electricity consumers to evaluate grid impacts more comprehensively by assessing multiple projects concurrently rather than sequentially. With 300 MW of initial capacity already under construction and a firm Q4 2027 target for Sweetwater 1’s debut phase, IREN has established a measurable benchmark that industry competitors and investors will closely monitor.
