As energy demand for data centers rises across Metro Nashville, the Nashville Electric Service (NES) is implementing a framework to address the growing volume of requests from large-load facilities. The utility system stated its objective is to ensure these projects are evaluated transparently, protect existing customers and grid reliability, and support responsible growth.

“We're not turning folks away, but we're trying to be careful and thoughtful in our approach.”

NES evaluates large-load requests based on five key factors: reliability, cost, infrastructure, operations, and community. Any project exceeding five megawatts—including expansions—will trigger a joint review by both TVA and NES.

NES will also sign onto the Ratepayer Protection Pledge, which outlines that large-scale industrial developments and technological infrastructure projects must pay their fair share.

“The Ratepayer Protection Pledge is built around a common-sense concept: households, small businesses, schools, hospitals, and local employers should not see higher electric bills because a large new customer requires substantial generation, transmission, or distribution investments,” said NES President and CEO Teresa Broyles-Aplin.

NES also discussed a retail data center-specific rate aligned with TVA’s rate increase, which will be implemented over the next two years. Subsequently, a data center-specific contribution and aid-of-construction approach was recommended to the board.

This framework marks just the beginning for data center policy; the board expects to consider additional measures in the future.
