A recent Moody’s report, first detailed by The Register, indicates that U.S. data center construction is accelerating faster than the national power grid can accommodate. As power availability emerges as a primary bottleneck for future developments, the analysis estimates that approximately $110 billion in new electricity generation capacity will be necessary. By 2030, data centers across the United States alone could consume over 426 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity.

Supply constraints are compounded by a structural mismatch: developers can break ground on new data center campuses significantly faster than grid infrastructure can be built. Power projects routinely encounter protracted planning stages, extended equipment lead times, and persistent supply chain bottlenecks. Under these conditions, the report notes that some initiatives face delays of up to seven years.

Regional strategies offer potential models for addressing these challenges. In Canada’s Saskatchewan, for instance, provincial policy mandates that large new facilities generate their own power. Moody’s recommends that the U.S. grid modernization strategy prioritize transmission infrastructure to transport electricity directly to emerging data center clusters, rather than focusing exclusively on expanding generation capacity. Upgrading transmission networks could simultaneously deliver lower-cost energy from distant sources to rural communities, creating a mutually beneficial outcome.

The strain has prompted several U.S. states and municipalities to impose temporary moratoriums on new development while lawmakers reassess existing regulations. Although President Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge seeks to shield consumers from escalating utility costs by placing financial responsibility squarely on provider companies, Moody’s concludes that the sheer velocity of data center approvals outpaces current grid readiness. Ultimately, successful project delivery will require direct investment and operational support from the developers themselves to bolster grid capacity and ensure timely campus completion.
