IREN은 스페인에 300MW 규모의 데이터센터 부지에 대한 인허가를 확보했다.
IREN (NASDAQ: IREN) obtained authorization for civil works for its planned AI data center campus in Badajoz, Spain, the company said Wednesday. The site is expected to provide approximately 300 MW of campus capacity, with initial operations expected in 2028. IREN made the announcement at NVIDIA GTC Berlin, where it also launched IREN Europe, a holding company for its European operations.
Badajoz, in the Extremadura region, is IREN's first European project. The company said grid-connected power for the site is already secured, and the campus will use closed-loop liquid cooling and be designed for compatibility with NVIDIA's DSX AI Factory Platform.
IREN is marketing the capacity to European customers that want control over where workloads run and who operates the hardware. "For customers in Europe, sovereign AI starts with two questions: where their data sits and who's running the infrastructure," said Daniel Roberts, IREN's co-founder and co-CEO.
Ángel Corcóstegui, a former first vice chairman and CEO of Banco Santander, will chair the new IREN Europe board. He co-founded Iberian private equity firm Magnum Capital, which controlled Portuguese wind operator Iberwind from 2008 to 2015. He is also an independent director of Moeve.
Roberto Purcaro joins the board as executive director for Europe after serving as global head of complex opportunities and head of Italy at Macquarie Capital. Gabriel Nebreda, CEO of IREN Spain, runs a local team that now numbers more than 60 people. "IREN develops its own sites and operates them directly, and that's how we'll work in Europe," Purcaro said.
The Spanish team came from Nostrum Group, which IREN acquired in June. The deal added around 490 MW of power in Spain that is secured and connected to the grid, along with a further development pipeline. It also increased IREN's total portfolio to 5 GW.
IREN also plans to sell software alongside the floor space. It closed its Mirantis acquisition on August 4 for approximately 12.6 million shares, valued at about $625 million at signing, plus roughly $40 million in cash and other consideration, including restricted stock units. Mirantis' k0rdent AI platform integrates NVIDIA Infra Controller and NVIDIA Run:ai.
IREN said k0rdent AI's capabilities for isolating workloads and controlling operations can help customers address requirements for data residency, security and governance. The company plans to make those tools available as its European capacity comes online. It said it remains in consultation with local, regional and national authorities as Badajoz advances.
