An Indiana commission has approved $240 million in tax breaks for a new data center project in Indianapolis.

The Marion County Council has approved $240 million in tax abatements to support the development of a new data center in Indianapolis. Coordinated with the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC), the approval formalizes municipal backing for a major digital infrastructure expansion in central Indiana.

The project carries an estimated total investment of $1 billion over a 10-year period. According to council documentation, the facility will generate approximately 100 temporary construction jobs and 30 permanent operational positions. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2024, with the first phase projected to become operational by late 2026.

Under the approved agreement, the site will receive a 10-year property tax reduction capped at 50%, contingent upon meeting predefined performance milestones and annual compliance reporting. The incentive structure was designed to align with state economic development guidelines, balancing near-term capital deployment with long-term municipal revenue recovery.

“This represents a significant vote of confidence in Indianapolis as a premier technology hub,” said a council official following the unanimous vote. “The project will drive localized hiring while strengthening regional grid capacity.” A corporate spokesperson added, “We’re thrilled to partner with Marion County and the City of Indianapolis to deliver critical infrastructure that will support sustained economic growth.” Additional remarks characterized the development as “a game-changer” for “accelerating next-generation computing deployment” and “supporting infrastructure growth” across the Midwest.

The measure received final clearance from the Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners following technical and environmental reviews. Local leaders emphasized that the data center aligns with statewide objectives to attract high-density power consumers, diversify the industrial base, and secure long-term tax base expansion despite short-term abatements.
