Blue Energy Global has submitted the first part of an application to install a small nuclear reactor at a Texas power project. Located at the Port of Victoria, approximately 140 miles southwest of Houston, the facility is designed to supply power to a data center being developed in partnership with Crusoe.

The project will initially operate on natural gas before adding nuclear generation. Blue Energy plans to install gas turbines first, followed by as many as five small modular reactors. The company states that this gas-first approach can deliver electricity faster than relying solely on nuclear systems, which often require years for approval and construction. To support the build-out, Blue Energy has already secured agreements for GE Vernova gas turbines and a 300-megawatt reactor design from GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy.

The company intends to bring the site online with conventional generation before completing the nuclear portion. The second portion of its construction-permit application is expected to be submitted to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the second half of 2027. This project is one of several industry efforts to utilize nuclear power for data centers as demand for round-the-clock electricity continues to rise. While the reactor designs remain unproven, developers are actively seeking cleaner power sources capable of supporting large computing facilities.
