UAE 국부펀드, 일본 신규 AI 데이터센터 구축에 $6.3 billion 투자 검토

The United Arab Emirates is considering an investment of up to 1 trillion yen—approximately $6.3 billion—to construct an artificial intelligence data center in Japan. The project, led by Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, would be located in Akita Prefecture with a planned capacity of 500 megawatts, potentially making it one of Japan's largest data centers and attracting additional domestic and foreign investors. Related projects in the surrounding area could bring total investment to 2 trillion yen.

The initiative represents a significant move by Gulf sovereign capital into Asia-Pacific AI infrastructure, channeling funds into renewable-energy-backed data center construction in northern Japan. For the UAE, the investment diversifies AI asset allocation; for local Japanese regions and their suppliers, it offers large-scale infrastructure and operational opportunities.

Mubadala has a track record of major global AI and data center investments through vehicles such as MGX, including its acquisition of Aligned Data Centers. The Akita proposal continues the fund's strategy of securing computing infrastructure in geopolitically stable markets.

This investment reflects a broader trend among Gulf capitals—Saudi Arabia and others have similarly begun establishing data centers across Asia. These sovereign wealth funds are accelerating their pivot from energy to digital infrastructure, converting energy surpluses into long-term data center assets that secure future computing pricing power. The pattern is consistent: Gulf capital concentrates on global AI computing nodes; the largest data centers are often built by distant, well-capitalized sources; and regions with abundant renewable energy naturally attract AI infrastructure.
