OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk are backing calls to slow down AI development. Altman, Musk, and ex-Deepmind CEO Demis Hassabis have at least partly endorsed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposals, all agreeing on the need for independent oversight inside AI labs. Musk's support continues his years of warnings about AI risks, making it largely unsurprising. Altman and Amodei align particularly on the case for independent evaluation of AI labs.

In comments to Fortune, Altman stated that OpenAI will not go public this year, citing safety concerns—a decision he had already communicated internally in June. The company's current financial position may also constrain IPO timing, particularly relative to Anthropic's trajectory, though both factors could hold.

Not all voices support these proposals. Google researcher Peyman Milanfar has contested Amodei's framing, arguing that recursive self-improvement (RSI) rests on a naive assumption. Milanfar contends that the feedback loops inherent in such systems are fundamentally unstable: the harder a system optimizes itself, the deeper it tends to fall into blind spots, and reliable evidence emerges only from real-world deployment, not benchmarks. By this logic, Amodei's proposed "speed limit" is unnecessary. Milanfar argues instead: "Systems that reliably improve themselves will be governed, damped, slow, and bounded by margins that look wasteful. Because stability is the speed limit."
