Executives at Abu Dhabi-based AI firm G42 have held exploratory talks regarding the sale of a majority stake to U.S. companies, aiming to secure uninterrupted access to advanced semiconductor technology beyond next year. According to Bloomberg, the company was recently authorized to purchase cutting-edge AI chips without a U.S. export license until approximately April 2027, but must restructure its corporate ownership to retain that privilege afterward.

The proposed shift represents a major overhaul for G42, which was founded roughly eight years ago to spearhead Abu Dhabi’s initial expansion into technology. The firm operates under the oversight of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser, brother of Abu Dhabi’s ruler, and a key figure behind the country’s AI strategy.

Several executives are evaluating multiple pathways forward, according to individuals familiar with the discussions who requested anonymity due to the confidential nature of the negotiations. Potential structures include appointing a U.S. corporation as a majority shareholder or creating a wholly new U.S.-based holding entity. No final decisions have been reached.

G42’s current investor base already includes U.S. private equity firm Silver Lake, Microsoft, and the $385 billion Abu Dhabi wealth fund Mubadala Investment Co. Separately, the company is engaged in exploratory discussions with prospective investors to raise billions of dollars, Bloomberg reported last week.

The enterprise encompasses cloud computing, data centers, and AI applications. It is currently constructing a 5-gigawatt UAE-U.S. AI Campus in Abu Dhabi utilizing Nvidia semiconductors. Securing long-term chip supply would directly advance both G42’s operational roadmap and the UAE’s wider artificial intelligence objectives.

Broader diplomatic and economic alignments continue to support these efforts. The UAE has strengthened ties with the Trump administration, with a senior official noting that the country remains ahead of schedule on its commitment to invest $1.4 trillion in the United States, even amid ongoing regional conflict.

That strategic alignment coincided with the Trump administration’s decision to ease export restrictions on the UAE. In July, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Thani Al Zeyoudi told Bloomberg he dismissed concerns from Washington national security figures that exporting advanced chips to the UAE could indirectly benefit China or slow AI development in the US.
