Samsung Electronics is accelerating the construction timeline for its P5 Fab 2 facility in Pyeongtaek, South Korea by approximately six months, with groundbreaking now expected in July 2026. The company has recently deployed multiple pile drivers at the construction site, signaling that substantive construction activities will commence imminently. This acceleration represents a significant shift in Samsung's capital investment schedule and reflects the mounting urgency surrounding memory chip production capacity in response to AI infrastructure demand.

The P5 Fab 2 will be the sixth factory constructed within Samsung's Pyeongtaek industrial complex and notably will serve as the final semiconductor production line in the complex. The facility is designed around 300-millimeter wafer technology and is expected to achieve monthly production capacity between 200,000 and 300,000 wafers once fully operational. Samsung is targeting 2029 for the facility's initial production commencement, meaning the company anticipates approximately three years from groundbreaking to first volume production.

The acceleration of the P5 Fab 2 timeline is directly attributable to surging demand for storage chips driven by the ongoing AI infrastructure investment wave. Data center expansions, model training operations, and inference deployments worldwide have created unprecedented demand for both DRAM and NAND flash memory. Samsung's decision to compress its development timeline by half a year underscores how acute the supply-demand imbalance has become in the memory semiconductor market.

From a strategic standpoint, the P5 Fab 2 holds particular significance as it represents Samsung's final major capacity addition to its flagship Pyeongtaek complex, one of the company's most strategically important manufacturing hubs. The facility's substantial planned capacity of up to 300,000 wafers monthly, when fully ramped, could meaningfully contribute to global memory supply and help alleviate persistent bottlenecks in AI infrastructure buildout.
