Google's Project Suncatcher has run its first workload on an orbital TPU, a poetry-generating AI task, while the company admits space data centers would cost 100x more than terrestrial ones.
The demonstration shows orbital compute works technically, but the 100x cost gap means space-based AI infrastructure remains a long-term research bet rather than a near-term alternative to terrestrial data centers.
