Meta announces a diversified silicon strategy, moving away from single-vendor dependence to source chips from multiple suppliers for its data centers.
Meta announced the hiring of Dr. Alexis Björlin, a Broadcom and Intel veteran, as its VP of Infrastructure Hardware Engineering, reporting directly to Meta infrastructure leader Jason Taylor. According to Taylor, this hire reflects Meta's need to address a set of unique datacenter requirements driven by the incredible diversity of the company's business. The company performs an incredible amount of video streaming, which it addresses with an in-house designed video transcoding chip visible across its Instagram and Facebook platforms. Additionally, Meta heavily utilizes technologies in areas like computer vision, text to speech, and language translation where training has moved from CPUs to NVIDIA GPUs.
Meta's silicon needs extend significantly into recommendation engines, which power experiences across Facebook and Instagram much like those seen on large-scale e-commerce sites such as Amazon and on Netflix. These recommendation capabilities rely extensively on machine learning and require substantial computing resources. According to Jason Taylor, Meta's silicon strategy's primary focus is working with industry-leading vendors like AMD, Broadcom, Intel, and NVIDIA, and that approach will not change in the near-term. Meta also appears to be working with Marvell.
However, the rapid growth and diversity of workloads, particularly in areas like AI, necessitates a new approach to silicon strategy. Specifically, Taylor identified the rapidly growing need for memory or networking bandwidth to provide the best recommendation capabilities in the future as an area where new and custom silicon approaches are needed. This growing need is being addressed through aggressive investments in people, partners and in-house silicon engineering. Meta's approach will entail a mix of general-purpose silicon from its CPU, GPU and networking partners alongside in-house special purpose processors for custom workloads.
Unlike other major technology companies that have strong-armed their semiconductor partners, Meta continues to invest in them. The hiring of Dr. Alexis Björlin to lead infrastructure hardware engineering directly supports this strategy of expanding Meta's in-house silicon capabilities while maintaining productive partnerships with industry vendors.
