Wilson Vu, Microsoft's senior director of AI systems hardware architecture, is joining OpenAI to work on its compute architecture.
Wilson Vu, senior director of hardware architecture for AI systems at Microsoft, has left the company to join OpenAI.
Vu worked for Microsoft for 12 years, across three separate stints at the tech giant. He most recently ran a team developing AI and GPU platforms.
He will now work on compute architecture as a member of the technical staff at the generative AI firm.
Vu has also worked as a hardware engineer on AI systems and accelerated platforms at Meta, a systems design lead at Salesforce, a hardware development engineer at Supermicro, and a principal engineering manager at GoDaddy.
OpenAI is developing its own AI hardware to support a growing compute fleet, which includes Nvidia and AMD GPUs, Google TPUs, and its own Jalapeño chips.
Jalapeño is expected to be deployed in limited quantities later this year, and more widely deployed next year.
