TSMC will produce the majority of NVIDIA's next-generation Ampere GPUs on the 7nm process.
NVIDIA's next-generation Ampere GPU, set to be unveiled in 2020, will be manufactured by both Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung, though the two foundries will not share the workload equally. According to recent reports, TSMC will handle most of NVIDIA's new 7nm GPU production, while Samsung will only receive a small portion of orders. These new 7nm GPUs will power a diverse range of products spanning from the GeForce GTX/RTX series through to HPC and datacenter parts.
During GTC 2019 in China, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang addressed the tech press regarding the manufacturing distribution for the company's 7nm GPUs in 2020 and beyond. Huang confirmed that most of the 7nm GPU production will be handled by TSMC, while Samsung will manage only a small portion of 7nm GPU production for NVIDIA. The CEO emphasized TSMC's critical role in NVIDIA's success, stating that "without TSMC and their advanced process technologies, NVIDIA would not have been so effective with power efficiency and performance of its 12nm-based GeForce RTX and Quadro RTX graphics cards."
This reliance on TSMC's advanced nodes positions NVIDIA favorably against AMD's competing offerings. Huang specifically highlighted the comparison with AMD's latest 7nm Navi GPU architecture, which powers the Radeon RX 5500 and RX 5700 series graphics cards. By leveraging TSMC's manufacturing capabilities, NVIDIA aims to maintain performance and efficiency advantages in the competitive graphics card market.
While an unveiling at CES 2020 appears unlikely, NVIDIA is expected to introduce the new Ampere GPU at its annual GPU Technology Conference (GTC) scheduled for March 2020, where the company traditionally showcases its next-generation technologies.
