CoreWeave expands into Indonesia—first Southeast Asia AI data center play by leading peer GPU cloud provider
As AI adoption accelerates across Southeast Asia, CoreWeave is establishing its first Asia-Pacific footprint with plans for three facilities in Indonesia. The Greater Jakarta deployment will deliver 360 MW of contracted IT power and is expected to begin operations in 2028, serving AI labs, startups, enterprises, and government customers across the region.
The expansion reflects a strategic shift among AI infrastructure providers building regional capacity to reduce latency and meet data residency requirements. CoreWeave will lease the facilities from an unnamed colocation provider while owning and operating the compute infrastructure itself.
"CoreWeave goes where we can bring AI pioneers the capacity, performance, and reliability they need to build and scale their ideas," said Chief Operating Officer Sachin Jain. "Indonesia is investing heavily in AI education and digital capacity, and it's paying off. The country is becoming one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing destinations for global tech investment."
The move signals CoreWeave's transition from a North American and European player into a global AI infrastructure platform. According to Dave McCarthy, research vice president for cloud and edge infrastructure at IDC, "CoreWeave is signaling that it intends to compete globally against legacy hyperscalers. Securing this level of scale in APAC establishes first-mover advantage as regional enterprise AI adoption ramps up toward 2028."
As of March 31, 2026, CoreWeave operated 49 data centers worldwide with more than 1 GW of active power and more than 3.5 GW of contracted power supporting AI workloads. Indonesia marks the company's first Asia-Pacific location.
CoreWeave selected Indonesia over more established markets like Singapore or Japan, citing the country's growing AI ecosystem and substantial government and private investment in data centers and AI education. "CoreWeave picked Indonesia because the country has already built AI infrastructure momentum, making it a natural entry point into Southeast Asia, not because it beat out a shortlist of rivals," a company spokesperson said.
Indonesia offers practical advantages over mature regional hubs. "Indonesia provides what traditional tier-1 hubs like Singapore or Tokyo currently struggle with: scalable power availability, ample land, and strong national tailwinds for digital infrastructure," McCarthy noted. "While mature markets face severe power constraints and higher operating costs, Indonesia provides CoreWeave the physical runway required for a mega-scale buildout right at the demographic center of Southeast Asia's booming digital economy."
The investment supports Indonesia's broader digital infrastructure ambitions and the company plans to hire and train a local operations team.
The Indonesia deployment reflects a fundamental shift in AI infrastructure strategy. Early AI investments centered on massive training clusters in the US and Europe. As inference workloads grow and governments adopt stricter data residency requirements, enterprises are demanding AI infrastructure located closer to users and data. "We are seeing the transition from centralized global AI clusters to localized, sovereign AI deployments," McCarthy said. "As AI workloads shift from raw foundation model training to real-time inference and domain-specific fine-tuning, latency constraints and strict data residency regulations mandate in-country compute."
Asia-Pacific data center development has reached unprecedented scale. Cushman & Wakefield research reveals the region's development pipeline hit 26.5 GW in the first half of 2026, driven by demand from hyperscalers, cloud providers, and AI platforms. With 7.1 GW added to the pipeline and 1.4 GW of operational capacity delivered, Southeast Asia has emerged as a key growth engine, accounting for nearly 50% of under-construction capacity.
The Indonesia deployment is being driven by existing customer demand and anticipated growth across Southeast Asia. Enterprises, AI-native companies, and governments require compute close to their data and users due to latency-sensitive workloads and data locality requirements. While CoreWeave declined to discuss additional Asia-Pacific projects, the company said it will continue expanding as customer demand grows.
