Intel begins testing discrete Xe HPG gaming GPU in industry benchmarks.

Intel has begun shipping its debut Xe discrete graphics cards to partners, marking a significant milestone for the company. However, the initial Xe LP version is limited in scope—designed for media encoding tasks and intended only for affordable prebuilt PCs. A more ambitious milestone came late Tuesday night when Intel chief architect Raja Koduri teased a gaming-focused successor, sharing a screenshot of a forthcoming 3DMark benchmark running on Intel's Xe HPG graphics card architecture.

In a tweet, Koduri wrote, "Xe HPG mesh shading in action, with the UL 3DMark Mesh Shader Feature test that is coming out soon." The HPG designation stands for "High-Performance Gaming," and the tease underscores Intel's ambitions for this architecture. While Xe LP targets multimedia and encoding, Mesh Shaders form a core component of DirectX 12 Ultimate, Microsoft's graphics API that unifies the capabilities of Windows 10 PCs and the Xbox Series X. Both Nvidia and AMD's most recent graphics cards already support DirectX 12 Ultimate, suggesting Intel's gaming GPU will follow suit.

The technical specifications reveal the ambition of this progression. The Xe LP graphics cards currently shipping to system vendors contain 80 execution units, while early rumors suggest Xe HPG will scale up to roughly 500 execution units, though Intel has not yet disclosed deeper architectural details. The timing comes as the graphics card market faces severe strain—shortages and steep price gouging have made conditions miserable for consumers—making the arrival of a third major competitor potentially significant.

Intel's graphics division has moved swiftly on multiple fronts beyond these consumer-facing initiatives. Raja Koduri also revealed the silicon design for Xe HPC, a datacenter-focused architecture, and subsequently demonstrated its capabilities by showing results of the chip rendering a Mandelbrot fractal after powering on for the first time.
