Anthropic signed a seven-year, $11.6 billion cloud infrastructure deal with Akamai Technologies, bringing total compute commitments to $517 billion in 11 months.
Anthropic has signed a seven-year, $11.6 billion cloud deal with Akamai Technologies, according to Reuters. As part of the agreement, Anthropic will receive a warrant for up to 5 percent of Akamai's stock—2 percent tied to the current contract, with an additional 3 percent if the deal expands by up to $9 billion. Akamai's stock jumped 22 percent after hours. The company expects to incur capital costs of approximately $5.5 billion and an additional $1.7 billion in spending by the end of 2026.
This follows Anthropic's $45 billion compute commitment from Nscale announced just last month. In total, the company has reportedly closed compute deals worth $517 billion within eleven months. Whether this pace is sustainable remains uncertain. Both Anthropic and OpenAI are locking in capacity based on projected future revenue. In December 2025, CEO Dario Amodei warned that Anthropic could face bankruptcy if its revenue estimates were off by even a small margin. More recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman similarly urged caution regarding unsustainable spending on compute infrastructure buildouts.
