Ireland data centers now consume 23% of the country's total electricity, up 10% year-over-year; grid restrictions remain tight around Dublin.
Electricity consumption by Irish datacenters increased by 10 percent in 2025, despite an effective moratorium on most new grid connections in the Dublin area.
According to Ireland's Central Statistics Office (CSO), datacenters now account for nearly a quarter of the country's metered electricity consumption. The sector's share rose to 23 percent in 2025, up from 20 percent in 2023, 14 percent in 2021, and just 5 percent in 2015.
CSO data shows datacenter energy use expanded from 6,973 gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2024 to 7,663 GWh in 2025. All other customers increased consumption by just 2 percent over the same period. Datacenters now consume more electricity than urban households, which account for 18 percent of metered use, and more than twice the consumption of rural households at 9 percent.
"Datacenter consumption has grown every single year without exception," said Grzegorz Głaczyński, statistician in the CSO's Climate and Energy Division. "It more than doubled between 2015 and 2019 from 1,240 GWh to 2,490 GWh, and tripled again between 2019 and 2025, reaching 7,663 GWh."
The rapid growth prompted Ireland's Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) to impose an effective moratorium on new datacenter grid connections, particularly in Dublin where most activity concentrates. The moratorium remained in place through 2025 before being lifted in December.
Under new regulations, datacenter operators seeking grid connections exceeding 10 megawatts must now install on-site generation or battery systems capable of supplying equivalent power. These systems are required to feed power back to the national grid when requested—an approach already implemented by Microsoft and Digital Realty.
Ireland hosts more than 80 datacenters across a population of just over 5 million. Growing public opposition to new facilities reflects concerns about the sector's energy intensity. Similar tensions have emerged globally, with the U.S. Trump administration working to address public concerns about datacenters' potential impact on energy costs and local water supplies.
