Google deployed four TPUs aboard a satellite launched on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare on October 1st, 2026, in partnership with Planet Labs.

Space-based AI compute is still experimental and marginal (four TPUs vs. ground datacenter scale), but Google's public partnership signals intent to explore edge-deployed inference and establishes a datalink model for latency-sensitive satellite operators.

Google has partnered with Planet Labs to launch a prototype satellite carrying four TPUs into orbit aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission. This inaugural launch represents the first step in Project Suncatcher, Google's long-term initiative to develop scalable machine learning infrastructure in space.

Over the coming weeks, in-orbit data will be collected to assess how Google's TPUs withstand the physical stress, radiation, and thermal extremes of the space environment. These findings will refine the design of future systems intended for space-based deployment.
