Nvidia has announced a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, a data centre developer backed by SoftBank and OpenAI, cementing its position as the sole supplier of computing infrastructure at a major new OpenAI facility under construction in Ohio.

According to Securities and Exchange Commission filings, the investment ensures that Nvidia chips will power the Ports-Pike data centre near Cincinnati. Nvidia will also provide up to $105 billion in credit to support construction of the facility, which could scale from an initial 4.25 gigawatts to 8 gigawatts.

SB Energy’s existing investors include SoftBank and OpenAI. To help fund the project, SB Energy will construct a 9.2-gigawatt natural gas power plant on the site, which sits on land owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and was previously used to enrich uranium for the country’s nuclear arsenal. The power plant is expected to cost $33 billion, reflecting a 66% rise in the cost of building natural gas power plants over the past two years.

The investment is the latest example of Nvidia entrenching itself across the AI infrastructure stack, having previously committed capital and credit to AI data centre operators including CoreWeave, Nebius, and Lambda. It also deepens the financial relationships between Nvidia, SoftBank, and OpenAI at a time when all three remain central to the accelerating buildout of global AI computing capacity.
