Intel's flagship GPU, Ponte Vecchio, has emerged from development stages with multiple iterations already underway. Recent filings in the EEC registry, spotted by industry observers on Twitter, reveal a progression from a Pre-Alpha version through to GAPV5, indicating that Intel is already four iterations beyond the pre-alpha prototype stage. The GPU is being developed in standard AIC (Add-In Card) form factor, as documented in the registry filings that list configurations including "Graphics card Ponte Vecchio RVP AIC (Pre-Alpha), GAPV3KI2TC," advancing through GAPV4KI2TC and GAPV5KE2TC, along with corresponding Si Upgrade Kit variants at Pre-Alpha, Alpha, and qualification stages. The GAPV5 designation likely stands for "Graphics, Alpha, Ponte Vecchio Version 5.0," though the full nomenclature of the internal codes remains to be fully deciphered.
Ponte Vecchio represents the next generation in Intel's Xe GPU family, positioned as an enterprise-class processor for exascale supercomputing. Intel's Chief Architect Raja Koduri previously characterized the Xe GPU effort as "the father of all GPU," and Ponte Vecchio, as a successor to the current Xe HP line targeted at exascale applications, is expected to exceed that capability. The GPU will be deployed in the upcoming Aurora exascale supercomputer, where up to six Ponte Vecchio GPUs will operate in conjunction with two Sapphire Rapids Xeon processors, connected via CXL (Compute Express Link) with a OneAPI software stack. Evidence from LinkedIn job listings containing the codename "Ponte Vecchio" alongside the related codename "Arctic Sound" suggests the GPU represents a derivative of the Arctic Sound GPU family, which was originally targeted at the data center market.
