SpaceX is behind a proposed 6 GW AI data center campus in Cochise County, Arizona.

If built, a 6 GW campus would be one of the largest AI capacity projects ever proposed, with major implications for regional power demand and the grid.

The Cochise Supercomputer Campus would draw up to 6 GW across nine data center buildings on roughly 750 acres near the Apache Generating Station [1] [2]. The generation that would supply the campus has not been identified [3]. The Cochise County Planning and Zoning Commission holds a public hearing on Dec. 9 [2].

SpaceX is the company behind a proposed AI data center campus in rural Cochise County, Arizona, that would draw up to 6,000 megawatts at full build-out [2] [3]. The special use application was filed under the name Tombstone Resources LLC. At a community meeting on Nov. 4, SpaceX representative Riley Trettel identified SpaceX as the owner and proposed long-term operator [3]. The AI products of SpaceXAI, as the merged company now brands them, would be the obvious tenant; the developer has said only that one company plans to use the facilities for AI model training and inference [1] [5].

The site sits near the Apache Generating Station along U.S. Highway 191. Conceptual plans show nine data center buildings, battery storage and 90 MW of natural-gas backup generators on about 750 acres bought from the Arizona Electric Power Cooperative (AEPCO) and Southline Transmission [1]. The 6 GW figure is the company's full build-out number. Trettel put the investment at up to $50 billion [3]. Construction could begin in March 2027, according to Data Center Dynamics [4].

**Power and water**

AEPCO would supply wholesale power and the Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative (SSVEC) would provide retail service [1]. AEPCO said it does not expect to add generation at the Apache station for the project, and the source of the electricity has not been identified. Any supply deal would need Arizona Corporation Commission approval [3]. Power sourcing is already a live issue for the company in Mississippi, where a judge has let an NAACP pollution case over SpaceXAI's gas turbines proceed (MLQ coverage).

The campus would use dry cooling, and the developer estimates staff water use at roughly what 20 to 30 Arizona homes consume a year [1]. The Dec. 9 hearing is the next step [2]. More than 1,000 people have signed a petition against the project, and hundreds attended the Nov. 4 meeting [1] [3].
