Oracle workforce fell 162K→141K (21,000 cuts) in fiscal 2026 amid aggressive AI datacenter infrastructure expansion.
Oracle's workforce shrank by 21,000 over the last year, according to the company's annual report. The company reported approximately 162,000 employees in June 2025, which fell to 141,000 by June 2026. US headcount declined by 9,000, while the international workforce fell by 12,000.
"Our periodic workforce restructurings and reorganizations can be disruptive," Oracle stated in its filing. "Deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce." The company added ominously: "We may initiate new restructuring plans in the future."
Reports of layoffs at Oracle have circulated in recent months as the company finances its AI datacenter build-out, with estimates ranging from 20,000 to 30,000. The annual report confirms that workforce reductions approximated 21,000 over the year in question.
Oracle outlined the consequences for the organization, noting: "These types of restructurings have resulted, and may in the future result, in increased restructuring costs and reduced productivity. These types of restructurings may also lead to shortages of sufficiently skilled employees in certain roles, loss of valuable institutional knowledge and damage to employee morale and retention."
In response to press inquiries, Oracle stated: "As our cloud and AI businesses grow, we will continually balance our resources and restructure our development group to help ensure we have the right people delivering the best cloud and AI products to our customers around the world."
Oracle is hardly alone in shedding staff amid AI rollout and infrastructure expansion. Microsoft has laid off thousands of workers over the past year—something CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged was "weighing heavily on me"—and in April offered a voluntary departure program to some US employees. While Microsoft has not disclosed how many staffers accepted, social media posts from departing employees highlighted the scale of the exodus.
These reductions reveal a hidden cost of workforce restructuring. Beyond the immediate impact on affected workers, the loss of institutional knowledge proves difficult to quantify but potentially significant for the companies involved.
