Digital Realty Trust this week announced the launch of Cloud House, a fourth data center on its Digital Docklands campus in London's riverfront business district. The new facility offers approximately 38,000 square feet of colocation space, making it the second-largest of the four buildings on the campus. The four interconnected buildings are linked by a private fiber network, enabling customers across any of the buildings to connect with customers in the others.

Digital Docklands provides customers with access to three internet exchanges as well as private dedicated network links to cloud providers Amazon Web Services and Oracle. Additionally, the campus's partner Megaport offers virtual connections to any of the 100-plus cloud on-ramps on its list. San Francisco-based Digital Realty, the world's second-largest data center provider, positioned the new facility as a strategic addition to its London operations.

Accompanying the data center launch, Digital Realty announced a study commissioned from the market research firm Development Economics, which assessed the expected economic impact on London from four emerging technology categories: Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and 5G wireless connectivity. Collectively, these technologies are expected to contribute £6.25 billion to the city's economy this year, growing to £24.29 billion in 2029. IoT will drive the bulk of this year's contribution at £3.09 billion, while AI is projected to become the largest contributor by 2029 at £10.46 billion. Of the four technologies, 5G's contribution is expected to grow the fastest, rising from £0.13 billion this year to £4.29 billion in 2029.
