Sunrun, America's largest home energy provider, is launching a distributed AI compute pilot that converts its 1.1 millio

Sunrun Inc., the largest provider of home battery storage, solar, and home-to-grid power plants in America, announced today a distributed AI compute pilot program that represents the company's entry into edge computing. The pilot follows a successful proof of concept and will place compute nodes in homes equipped with Sunrun solar and battery storage systems. The company is coordinating the sale of inference capacity to enterprise compute buyers while testing nodes under various conditions and rate structures. Participating homeowners receive compensation for hosting the compute equipment.

AI inference demand is growing at approximately 35 percent annually and is projected by McKinsey to surpass training as the dominant AI workload by 2030, representing more than half of all AI compute. Unlike AI training, which requires massive tightly synchronized clusters, inference is modular, geographically distributable, and highly sensitive to latency, making it well-suited for edge deployment near end users. Sunrun's distributed footprint of more than 1.1 million existing customers provides a structural advantage that hyperscalers cannot quickly replicate. While traditional data centers require years to permit, build, and interconnect, Sunrun's distributed model can add significant inference capacity in a fraction of the time.

This distributed compute pilot complements Sunrun's recently announced agreement with Renew Home and Tesla to aggregate more than 16 gigawatts of flexible home energy capacity for hyperscalers and utilities. Sunrun expects to complete the pilot over the coming months, assessing results against defined milestones, compute performance, and homeowner experience before determining the scale and speed of a broader rollout. The company is actively discussing commercial and deployment frameworks with enterprise compute offtakers, homebuilders, and utility partners.
