Moore Threads, a Chinese GPU maker, unveiled its Chunxiao GPU with 4,096 stream processors, GDDR6 memory, and PCIe 5 support.
Moore Threads Intelligent Technology, a major graphics processor developer from China, announced its next-generation GPU based on the Chunxiao architecture designed for gaming, artificial intelligence, and datacenter workloads. The company introduced two products: the MTT S80 gaming graphics card and the MTT S3000 server board, both promising to deliver compute performance comparable to Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, though their actual performance in games and professional applications remains to be tested.
The Chunxiao GPU supports FP32, FP16, and INT8 precision and is compatible with Moore Threads's MUSA computing platform and application programming interface, as well as standard APIs. The processor is clocked at 1.80 GHz to 1.90 GHz and features 4,096 stream processors, 128 tensor cores, 256 texture units, and 256 render output units. The GPU includes a 256-bit memory interface supporting GDDR6 memory with a 14 GT/s data transfer rate, 16 PCIe Gen5 lanes, and full SR-IOV specification support for PCIe virtualization in server environments. It supports up to 32-way partitioning for Android games rendering. The chip includes a powerful video engine supporting AV1, H.264, and H.265 codecs for up to 8K videos and can decode up to 32 streams at 1080p30 resolution. For display output, the GPU features four display engines supporting up to 8Kp30 resolution, with three DisplayPort 1.4 interfaces and one HDMI 2.1 interface.
Moore Threads reports that its Chunxiao GPU can deliver 14.4 FP32 TFLOPS or 15.2 FP32 TFLOPS depending on clock speeds. The chip comprises 22 billion transistors, positioning it between Nvidia's GA104, which features 17.4 billion transistors, and AMD's Navi 21, which packs 26.8 billion transistors. The manufacturer has not disclosed which process technology is used to produce the Chunxiao graphics processor.
The Chunxiao GPU offers broad compatibility across various hardware platforms including Arm, Ampere, and Intel processors, supporting Microsoft's DirectX, Khronos Group's OpenGL/OpenGL ES, and the proprietary MUSA platform. It is compatible with PyTorch, TensorFlow, PaddlePaddle, Jittor, and other mainstream deep learning frameworks. Moore Threads collaborated with developers of Unreal Engine and Unity, as well as creators of popular titles such as Call of Duty, Crossfire, Counter Strike, Diablo 3, and League of Legends. Currently, the Chunxiao properly supports approximately 20 DirectX titles.
Moore Threads plans to offer the MTT S80 graphics card with 14.4 FP32 TFLOPS throughput and 16GB of memory, as well as the MTT S3000 server card with 15.2 FP32 TFLOPS compute performance and 32GB of memory. The MTT S80 features a sophisticated cooling system with three fans, though power consumption for neither product has been disclosed. Sales of the MTT S80 graphics card are scheduled to begin on November 11, 2022, at JD.com, with no pricing announced.
