A new data center and technology campus is being developed along Dalby–Kogan Road in Kogan, expanding regional Australian compute infrastructure.

A development application prepared for Zerra DC has been lodged for the Western Downs Digital Park. Upon completion, the facility will rank among Australia’s largest data centres, situated at 1933 Dalby–Kogan Road, Kogan, approximately 35 kilometres from Dalby.

Designed by HDR, the proposed Western Downs Digital Park would span approximately 725.5 hectares. The site plan encompasses four data centre buildings, research and technology industry facilities, workforce accommodation, and high-impact industrial uses, including electrical substations and transmission infrastructure.

The data centres would primarily use air-cooled technology, supported by a closed-loop liquid cooling system drawing on rainwater harvesting and treated wastewater. An on-site battery-backed power conditioning system would also meet the development’s electricity requirements and strengthen the local power network. The site’s proximity to existing energy infrastructure has been identified as a key factor in its suitability.

Planners at Urbis state, “The planning assessment identifies that the proposal generally responds positively to the strategic direction of the Western Downs Planning Scheme 2017. Key planning matters considered in the report include land use compatibility, building height, amenity impacts, strategic location, planning need, community benefit and scenic amenity. While the proposal involves non-rural land uses and exceeds the prescribed building height to a limited extent, the report concludes that these matters are appropriately justified having regard to the site’s Special Industry Area designation, substantial setbacks, limited visibility, separation from sensitive receivers and the functional requirements of the development.”
