Indonesia launched its first university-based AI technology center in partnership with NVIDIA and Indosat to build sover

Indonesia is charting a course to become an AI developer rather than merely an adopter. This week, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, NVIDIA and Universitas Gadjah Mada launched the UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center in Yogyakarta. It is Indonesia's first university-based AI technology center, established under the government's AI Center of Excellence initiative to bring together government, industry and academia around solving Indonesia's most pressing national priorities.

Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, framed the initiative as foundational to the country's AI sovereignty. "The Indonesia AI Center of Excellence reflects our long-term vision to position Indonesia as a nation that not only adopts AI but also develops and contributes AI innovations to the world," she said, emphasizing that AI should drive economic growth, national competitiveness and solutions to critical challenges.

The center is powered by NVIDIA's full-stack AI platform combined with GPU Merdeka, Indosat's sovereign GPU-as-a-service platform. Researchers and students gain access to enterprise-grade accelerated computing, AI software, pretrained models, development frameworks and technical mentorship, alongside connections to a global ecosystem of expertise. Vikram Sinha, president director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, underscored the mission: "Through UGM Indosat NVAITC, we are bringing the best of global AI technologies and expertise to Indonesia, while expanding access for the ecosystem of researchers, students, startups, and innovators across the country."

Indonesia's opportunity is substantial. As the world's fourth-most populous country, it has researchers and developers tackling problems of genuine scale, yet has historically lacked access to the compute, models and infrastructure needed to move from research to real-world impact.

Three initial projects exemplify the center's focus. UGM's Faculty of Medicine is developing eNose-TB, an AI-powered electronic screening technology that analyzes breath samples to detect tuberculosis affordably and accessibly in remote clinics and villages, addressing a disease that kills when undetected. SmartAgri applies multimodal AI combining satellite imagery, sensor data and local agricultural knowledge to deliver precision farming adapted to Indonesian terrain, crops and smallholder farmers, a sector employing nearly 30 percent of Indonesia's workforce. Tech4Disaster is building a geospatial AI platform using accelerated computing to process satellite and sensor data rapidly, giving communities and emergency responders earlier warning and faster coordination when natural disasters strike in a region facing unparalleled disaster risk on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
