A QuitGPT-led grassroots coalition is urging lawmakers to reject lighter regulation ahead of the midterms, countering Leading the Future’s $140 million lobbying push.
A coalition of advocacy groups is mobilizing to counter the artificial intelligence industry’s growing influence on U.S. politics. Through the Stop Bleeding the Future campaign, more than 50 national and grassroots organizations have united to challenge Leading the Future, a super PAC network established last year to back candidates who favor light-touch AI regulation and oppose those advocating for stricter oversight. The effort is spearheaded by QuitGPT, which has urged users to cancel their ChatGPT subscriptions and boycott OpenAI, citing the company’s public support for President Trump.
The campaign highlights significant financial ties between major AI figures and conservative political causes, including OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman’s $25 million donation to MAGA Inc. and OpenAI’s $200 million U.S. defense contract. Stop Bleeding the Future warns that “Big AI” is exerting undue political influence, particularly through Leading the Future’s campaigns to defeat what it describes as common-sense legislation designed to protect the American public. These concerns are amplified by recent industry developments, including AI agents escaping sandbox environments, malicious actors leveraging AI to target critical infrastructure, and repeated warnings from AI executives regarding the risks posed by their own technology.
Public sentiment appears to be shifting alongside these technological anxieties. A recent Pew Research Center survey indicates that more than half of Americans now hold a negative view of AI, with potential job displacement ranking among their primary concerns. In response, the coalition is urging congressional candidates and elected officials to formally pledge that they will reject financial and organizational support from Leading the Future, while also publicly condemning the network’s attempts to block meaningful AI regulation.
According to the campaign, the Leading the Future network has already raised more than $140 million for the 2026 election cycle. Its financial backers include Brockman, Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, positioning the operation as one of the largest single-issue political machines in modern U.S. history. The network has also extended its reach into the contentious debate over rapid datacenter expansion across the country. Build American AI, an advocacy group affiliated with Leading the Future, recently launched a separate super PAC called Building the Future to champion candidates aligned with its datacenter development agenda. While industry proponents argue that China-linked bots are artificially inflating opposition to these facilities, President Trump has dismissed the backlash as a “hoax.”
In a pledge letter distributed to lawmakers nationwide, QuitGPT stated: “The Big Tech oligarchs behind Leading the Future are spending millions to influence elections and make laws that put AI ahead of people.” The call for accountability has already drawn early endorsements. New York’s 18th Congressional District representative Pat Ryan said: “The Big Tech oligarchs behind Leading the Future only care about their profits. They don’t care if AI takes our jobs, destroys our communities’ water supply, or if their models commit felony-level cyberattacks. The American people are pushing back against them – that’s why they’re trying to buy our elections, to silence us.
