EverWind Fuels in Nova Scotia explores co-location of AI data centers at its green hydrogen production facility.
Green hydrogen and ammonia producer EverWind Fuels is exploring the addition of data centers to its planned green fuels facility in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia. Company spokesperson Claire Parsons confirmed to the CBC that the firm is "exploring opportunities to host a data center at our existing industrial site at Point Tupper." A potential data center development would complement the fuel production plans by strengthening the energy and infrastructure platform at the site while attracting new industries to the region. EverWind has notified Richmond County municipality officials of these plans but has not yet filed any formal application. Details regarding the number, size, and development timeline for any data centers remain undisclosed.
The Point Tupper Green Fuels Project is expanding an existing fuels storage terminal to produce approximately 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually using newly constructed renewable power generation. The project is fully permitted and received Environmental Assessment approval in 2023, with the first phase expected to come online as soon as 2029. A second phase will add approximately 800,000 tonnes of additional annual production capacity.
To support the facility's energy requirements, EverWind is developing multiple wind farm projects across Nova Scotia. The Phase 1 portfolio comprises 650 megawatts of capacity across four projects: Bear Lake Wind Project, Windy Ridge Wind Project, Kmtnuk Wind Project, and Upper Afton Wind Project. These projects are scheduled to come online around 2028 and will connect directly to the provincial power grid. An Indigenous consortium led by Membertou First Nation holds majority ownership of the Phase 1 wind portfolio.
Phase 2 will add three grid-independent wind farms—Setapuktuk Wind Project, Ocean Lake Wind Project, and Harbour Hills Wind Project—in Guysborough and St. Mary's counties. These will connect to the fuel plant via the Strait Crossing Transmission Line Project, a new overhead transmission line crossing the Strait of Canso that received Environmental Assessment approval in Nova Scotia last year.
EverWind, backed by asset manager Nuveen through its energy infrastructure credit unit, acquired the Point Tupper fuel terminal from NuStar Energy in 2022. The site occupies the location of the former Gulf Oil Refinery, which operated in the 1970s. Nearby stands the 150-megawatt Point Tupper Generating Station, a coal plant that opened in 1973 and was originally designed to run on oil from the refinery. Nova Scotia Power is planning to convert the coal plant to natural gas operation beginning in 2029.
