importance 92Meta has announced plans for a new subsea cable linking France and the United States with a capacity of 1 petabit per second (Pbps)—equivalent to 1,000 terabits per second. This will establish the most advanced subsea cable of its length and exceed the performance of Meta's current Anjana cable system, which operates at 0.5 Pbps.
The Anjana cable spans 4,425 miles from Spain to the United States, delivering 480 Tbps of capacity across 24 fiber pairs. The new cable, Petal, increases this capacity by employing a two-core fiber architecture with 48 fiber pairs total—24 pairs per core—to achieve 1 Pbps across transatlantic distances.
