Global PE giant KKR establishes Helix division to specialize in AI infrastructure investment and development.
On June 10, KKR formally announced the establishment of Helix Digital Infrastructure, a company dedicated to coordinating AI computing capacity development for hyperscale cloud providers. The company was established with over $10 billion in long-term capital commitments at inception. Principal founding investors include KKR, Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA), NVIDIA, and Vistra. Adam Selipsky, former Chief Executive Officer of Amazon Web Services (AWS), serves as Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer; Waldemar Szlezak, Head of Global Digital Infrastructure at KKR, serves as Chief Investment Officer. According to the official press release, Helix will invest in four areas: hyperscale data center development and operations; baseload and flexible power generation; transmission and distribution infrastructure; and fiber and connectivity services.
NVIDIA will serve as a strategic partner, coordinating alignment between Helix data center projects and NVIDIA's DSX AI Factory architecture, with a focus on maximizing token throughput per watt, minimizing total cost of ownership, and accelerating time to first token. Vistra, a leading integrated power generation and retail electricity company, will serve as the preferred power provider; it operates generating assets in 18 states and Washington, D.C., with total installed capacity expected to approach 50,000 megawatts by the end of 2026. Vistra has signed power purchase agreements exceeding 5,000 megawatts with hyperscale cloud providers.
Adam Selipsky stated: "Large-scale digital infrastructure users urgently need to reduce complexity and unlock new capacity. Helix combines substantial long-term capital with capabilities and expertise to rapidly and efficiently deliver comprehensive AI infrastructure solutions." NVIDIA Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang stated: "Useful AI has arrived, and demand for AI factories is extremely strong. AI is driving the largest-scale infrastructure build in modern history." Vistra President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Burke noted: "Power generation and grid interconnection are critical bottlenecks for AI infrastructure deployment."
The integration of private equity capital, sovereign wealth funds, leading GPU partners, and utility-scale power providers in a single platform reflects a broader pattern among infrastructure investors targeting the entire supply chain for AI computing (beyond chip manufacturing). Power supply has become a major bottleneck for new AI data center deployments in the United States. Specialized long-term capital instruments with pre-secured power and GPU supply aim to reduce coordination friction faced by hyperscale cloud providers in large-scale new capacity contracts. KKR's broader infrastructure platform manages over $100 billion in assets, of which digital and power assets exceed $70 billion.
Investors and practitioners should monitor Helix's site selection announcements, permitting and construction milestones, participation of additional institutional investors, details of any colocation or hosting service offerings, and any changes to GPU supply terms or regional grid interconnection timelines that could affect Helix's deployment plans.
