China opens massive AI campus facility capable of simultaneously running one million GPUs.
China has launched a vast artificial intelligence computing complex in Inner Mongolia, described as the world's largest AI computing industrial park—marking another major step in the country's race to expand AI infrastructure.
The Envision Galaxy Campus in Ulanqab began operations on Thursday, according to state-run media. Developed by green technology company Envision Group, the facility is described as the world's largest single AI data center by token output capacity, with a planned capacity of 2 gigawatts.
Spanning approximately 120,000 square meters, the facility is designed to accommodate computing power equivalent to one million graphics processing units (GPUs) operating simultaneously. This scale underscores the enormous infrastructure investment now required to support increasingly demanding AI systems, which require substantial computing power for training and running models.
The project distinguishes itself through its renewable energy focus. More than 80% of the campus's electricity is supplied directly from renewable sources, according to Envision Group.
The facility serves as the flagship project of Envision's "Mission Gobi" initiative, which aims to develop 5 gigawatts of green AI computing capacity in desert and arid regions worldwide by 2030. The strategy combines large-scale data centers with renewable energy generation and storage, addressing one of AI expansion's greatest challenges: the enormous electricity demand of data centers.
Inner Mongolia's location is particularly significant, given the region's substantial renewable energy resources and expansive tracts of land suitable for major infrastructure development.
As AI development accelerates globally, access to computing power has become increasingly critical for governments and technology companies. China's project reflects its broader strategy to build large-scale AI infrastructure while reducing the environmental impact of powering data-intensive systems.
The Envision Galaxy Campus represents more than a conventional data center. Its combination of massive GPU capacity, 2GW power footprint, and predominantly renewable electricity exemplifies China's approach to scaling AI computing while integrating renewable energy ambitions.
