OpenAI has temporarily suspended new sign-ups for its premium $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro subscription due to severe capacity constraints and infrastructure pressure following massive demand for its newly launched Astra model. Product Leader Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux confirmed the decision on X, noting that the compute-heavy Pro tier places the greatest strain on OpenAI's hardware systems. The pause applies exclusively to new Pro subscriptions, while existing users, the developer API, and lower-cost plans including ChatGPT Plus and Go remain operational.

The operational bottleneck follows Astra's September 3 rollout across OpenAI's Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business tiers. Positioned as a major advance in high-level reasoning, code generation, and autonomous computer-use capabilities—what the company characterized as entering the "AGI era"—Astra's launch triggered an unprecedented spike in compute usage.
