NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang visited the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, to commission a DGX GB300 system, bringing one of the world's most powerful AI platforms online for the school's 1,500 in-resident students, 600 faculty members, and researchers at the U.S. military's flagship graduate university.
At the event, Huang emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative, saying that timely information and insight are crucial to national defense. The DGX GB300 supercomputer, paired with NVIDIA Mission Control software, gives NPS students and faculty on-premises access to large-scale AI computing for model training and inference in applications including weather prediction, cybersecurity, and disaster resilience and response planning.
The commissioning took place during NPS's three-day Converge event and represents the latest development in an ongoing collaboration to build AI-based technologies at the school for education and real-world military applications. The system is anchored by an NVIDIA AI Technology Center on the Monterey campus, serving as a dedicated hub for AI research and graduate instruction.
Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, underscored the importance of modernizing military education alongside technology. He noted that leaders trained at NPS must understand both the opportunities and responsibilities of advanced computing and will command in AI-enabled environments where information moves at lightning speeds.
The DGX GB300 provides new technical capabilities for NPS programs spanning space operations to ocean science. Students and faculty can now train foundation models in-house, run high-fidelity simulations at scale, and develop AI tools with immediate applicability to real-world problems. Huang encouraged attendees to engage directly with the technology, noting that modern AI makes it more accessible than many believe.
NVIDIA has expanded the collaboration through its Deep Learning Institute, providing instructor toolkits to NPS faculty so AI education is woven throughout graduate curricula across departments. The school regularly hosts hackathons that have produced advances in autonomy, ocean research, and operations planning. Researchers are using AI to model sea conditions, predict atmospheric changes, and build digital twins of complex environments.
NPS's partnership with MITRE, a nonprofit organization, has produced a framework built on NVIDIA Omniverse libraries for simulating real-world navigation and decision-making under uncertain conditions. Supporting partners in the effort include DDN, which provided high-performance data infrastructure; VAST Data, which supplied a unified data platform for secure data access and management; and Vertiv, which provided racks, cooling, power infrastructure, installation support, and fluid management and monitoring.
