Anthropic has signed an agreement to lease approximately $45 billion in AI compute capacity from Nscale, a British artificial intelligence infrastructure firm, according to a source familiar with the matter. Founded in 2024, Nscale’s rapid ascent is underscored by this landmark contract, which follows earlier agreements with Microsoft.

Under the arrangement, Nscale will deliver compute power through NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin chips, a newly released, state-of-the-art architecture that integrates six distinct chip types operating in concert. As this design represents the current cutting edge of semiconductor engineering, the partnership positions Anthropic among the technology’s earliest commercial adopters. The leased capacity is scheduled to begin powering Anthropic’s services in late 2027.

First reported by Bloomberg, the six-year agreement draws processing power from Nscale’s flagship data center in West Virginia. It marks the latest milestone in Anthropic’s aggressive expansion of compute partnerships. Over the past eight months, the company has rapidly scaled its infrastructure to better compete with industry rivals, most notably OpenAI.

This deal follows a series of major commitments. Earlier this month, Anthropic finalized a separate $10 billion agreement with AI cloud startup Volta, which was founded only in January, securing six years of cloud computing resources hosted in a Norwegian data center. In July, the company inked a $5 billion compute-related contract with AMD.

Several months prior, in May, Anthropic entered into a substantial computing pact with SpaceX, tapping capacity from two separate SpaceX facilities. That arrangement reportedly delivers $1.25 billion worth of compute capacity each month—a notable collaboration given the well-documented rivalry between Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. In April, Anthropic significantly deepened its partnership with Amazon, gaining access to an additional 5 gigawatts of compute capacity. During that same month, the company also expanded its relationships with Google and Broadcom, further augmenting its infrastructure stack.

Nscale describes itself as a company building “the next frontier for AI.” According to the firm: “AI is reshaping every industry, every economy, and every human endeavor. Nscale is building the advanced infrastructure, systems and solutions that enables practitioners, enterprises, and governments across the globe to create, deploy, and scale their most transformative AI systems.”

Anthropic’s aggressive procurement strategy mirrors a broader industry trend. As the competition for processing capacity intensifies across the sector, major competitors including Google, OpenAI, and Meta are pursuing remarkably similar approaches, each racing to secure critical chip supply ahead of rival firms.
