UAE considering $6.3 billion investment in Japan's largest AI data center, representing major Middle East sovereign capital deployment in Asia-Pacific infrastructure.
The United Arab Emirates is considering an investment of up to 1 trillion yen (approximately US$6.3 billion) in a 500-megawatt AI data center project in Akita Prefecture, Japan. Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Co. would lead the investment, with the possibility of additional participation from foreign and domestic investors.
The total economic impact of the project, including investment from suppliers and companies establishing nearby operations, could reach 2 trillion yen (US$12.7 billion). Once completed, the facility could become Japan's largest data center.
Akita Prefecture's selection for this project reflects its existing advantages in renewable energy infrastructure, including wind power generation and water supplies capable of supporting large-scale data center operations. The initiative also aligns with Japan's national industrial policy, as Japan's economy ministry has designated regions including Akita as priority investment zones for AI data centers and semiconductor manufacturing, while providing financial support for related ventures.
For Mubadala, the proposed deal fits within its broader digital infrastructure strategy, which includes investments in hyperscale and AI-focused data center operators.
